Breaking Free From Your “Mind Prison”

I’m sure you’ve wondered why the same piece of advice or knowledge has dramatically different impacts on different people. And maybe you know the answer. It’s about what each person does to that piece of advice/knowledge that makes all the difference.

About three weeks ago I had the good fortunate to be invited as a VIP guest by Eben Pagan to attend (for free) his $1,997 5-day workshop called “Advanced Learning And Teaching Technologies” which he co-led with his mentor Wyatt Woodsmall. I, of course, was delighted by the invitation and attended the event. It was my first time at Eben’s live training so it was exciting to be in the middle of all the action, besides meeting new people and making friends.

What I didn’t expect though, was to have a real “life-transforming” event… and I’d been to no less than 35 seminars/workshops over the last 5 years!

** The Frustration That Was Just a Tip Of The Iceberg

Over the past 2 months or so I’d been puzzled by my inability to get past my mental block of not wanting to pursue Pay-Per-Click as a marketing method for my business. And the real frustration was the fact that I didn’t know the root of this strange “fear” of PPC. The frustration was so severe that I had multiple conversations with my friend Jim Yaghi (the PPC expert for Magnetic Sponsoring), both online and in person, to figure out what the heck was wrong with me. And then I wrote an essay of a personal e-mail to Ferny about this unusual challenge that I faced and sought his opinion and advice.

At the end of those conversations, a few good points were brought to light that I hadn’t exactly realized before…. But the interesting thing was that this newfound knowledge about myself was just scratching the surface of a bigger challenge, and in some ways I sunk even lower into the downward spiral.

** Perfect Timing. Eben’s invitation

Then Eben’s invitation came to my inbox. His event was exactly 4 days after my conversation with Ferny and Jim so it couldn’t have come at a better time!

The event’s teaching was based on the principles of NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming), a branch of applied psychology, and since I had had no experience with such discipline I felt uneasy yet excited about the workshop going into the event.

If I could summarize the whole experience with one sentence… it was basically a VERY public 5-day psycho-analysis with 120+ strangers!

On day 3, my mind was so overloaded with new information on top of my own conscious attempt to share real thoughts without exposing too much of my own vulnerability (it was hard to do) that I had to remove myself from the workshop after only a couple of hours so I could BREATHE. I fell short of racing out of the conference room in a blind panic. NO KIDDING.

** A 22-minute, VERY public psycho-analysis

On day 4, Eben invited two random attendees to share what they learned so far at the event. Now, being the type of event it was… anytime we shared our thoughts we were basically subjecting ourselves to be psycho-analyzed by Eben or Wyatt in front of the class… revealing our deepest fears and frustrations and vulnerabilities; so you could probably imagine that not too many hands went up.

I raised my hand and kept it way up as the others who initially had their hand up at my side of the room put their hands down before Eben could turn his head. Since I was the only one left who had the determination to receive some real mental beating I went up to the microphone.

Eben’s conversation with the first guy finished in about 4 minutes, so I secretly breathed a sigh of relief. However, Eben decided to do something different with me on the spot… He picked another student to come up to the other microphone to interact and analyze me instead of doing it himself. And long story short, Eben eventually took over as things didn’t’ go as well as he planned (remember, these students were not skilled in this type of analysis). We started going back and forth with questions, answers and analysis. It was actually one of the most illuminating experiences I’ve ever had.

During that exchange, Eben helped me discovered that I had built an unusually powerful “mind prison” that was keeping me from advancing to a new level of success and leadership. And the fact that I left the workshop in Day 3 was actually a big breakthrough. Why? Because it was something I had never done in a seminar before!

Over the last 5 years in network marketing and Internet marketing, I had attended no less than 35 seminars and workshops, including ones that were blatant pitch-fests (you know… those “workshops” where every speaker was a live, human-version of their hypey sales letters)… and I had NEVER left in the middle of a session in any of those events!

This mind prison I had built in my head was one that said “to be a good student, I MUST sit through the entire class, listen to everything the teacher/instructor has to say, take notes, and apply that knowledge… or else I wouldn’t be a good student.” So for years, that was what I did.

Upon listening to my explanation of my beliefs, Eben asked “Are you saying that you feel like you exercised freedom?”

And as soon as those words left his mouth, I thought to myself… “YES, that’s it! I can choose!”

After that intense 22-minute exchange (my lips started trembling about 5 minutes into it), I took a long time with myself to reflect on what had transpired and how I planned to change my behavior to make a real difference in my own life and others’.

** What did I learn?

Learning = Behavior Change (not information acquisition)

In hindsight, I attribute my early success in growing a large network marketing organization to this mind prison. It allowed me to build my business to a profitable level almost with brute force using only belly-to-belly marketing and the telephone. But it had its limitations and was not duplicable. And this mind prison actually indirectly caused my recent frustration with PPC.

As online marketers, we’ve learned that there are many different methods to market our businesses to generate more traffic and profit. As I studied various courses such as MLM Traffic Formula and Attraction Marketing Formula, my mind prison automatically instructed me to learn EVERY traffic method taught in those courses and become good at it, even if I didn’t like it. PPC happened to this one method that I didn’t particularly care for.

As a leader trained in the belly-to-belly world, I felt the right way to market online would be one where I could constantly be in communication with my audience. Forum posts, articles, videos, blogs, Facebook, Squidoo, e-mails all allow me to achieve that. But Google Adwords is just a piece of software, life-less… and as Jim and other PPC experts recommend that to be a good PPC marketer one has to monitor the campaigns daily, or even several times a day. But this mind prison that wanted me to be a “good student” actually back-fired and almost paralyzed me and my marketing! This idea that I wasn’t pursuing and perfecting PPC marketing had been haunting me for almost TWO YEARS, and although I was moving along with my other marketing efforts with some success, it certainly wasn’t anywhere near where it could have been had I had this exchange with Eben earlier!

Getting a little deeper into the issue, I traced the root of my mind prison all the way back to how I was brought up and the school systems under which I developed as a person… I recognize that my parents and their parents had always focused on academics and succeeding in school, and most educational systems encouraged mechanical memorization of information for the most part and demanded the student to excel at every subject possible; hence avoiding disapproval from my parents and teachers had always been one heck of a mind-prison to be caged in. I’m glad and grateful that I now have this conscious realization about myself and how I operate. I am now clear on how I can combat against it and eventually remove it from within myself. 30 years of that conditioning on the subconscious level is a challenge, but I’m sure I can do it.

** What can YOU do?

What is your mind-prison? Is it holding you back from accomplishing your goals or living a fuller life? I was fortunate to reach this level of understanding of myself through the inducement of a master in Eben Pagan; however, all of us can do this type of discovery on our own. One of the best and simplest ways to explore what your mind prison might be is to build a mind-map. If you have not heard of a mind-map, just head over to YouTube and do a search for mind-mapping. You’ll find some very helpful videos.

I believe what I experienced was not a unique case, although our mind prisons are most likely not the same. The difference between those that move on to live better lives and those that stay stuck in life is that some people are willing to look into their own eyes in the mirror to reflect and change their behaviors, where other people are not. It is critically important that we assess our own strengths and weaknesses and develop a blue-print for our own success. Are you game?

Create Instant Credibility In The Eyes Of Your Prospects

So when people ask you what you do, what do you say? “I am a distributor?” “A marketer?” “An engineer (oops…)?” How about “I wrote a book called ‘The Top 7 Secrets You Must Know Right Now To Live Your Dream Life?‘ or something more creative.

So what am I talking about? Well, I’m talking about writing a simle eBook or report that will help you gain instant credibility. It’s really nothing “new” to most of us, but I think it’ll be safe to say that 99% of us never even TRIED it. You see, when you are an author, people tend to automatically put you at an elevated position. It’ll give you tremendous leverage to attract more prospects. Check out Jim Yaghi’s profile. In it he said he’s “the author of ’8 Days to Cashflow in MLM’.” I think those are video series, but you get the drift.

One of the things I did was I created an eight-page report (yes, only 8 pages in 14-pt fonts… that’s it) for my retail business and got some very high-quality, paying leads for my retail business for almost TWO YEARS. No kidding. And I want to emphasize that the steps are really simple that all of us can do it.

Fernando Ceballos wrote in one of his articles that what’s stopping people “usually is something trivial like technology… which is a real shame.”

So… I decided to post my ebook called “Create Instant Credibility: A Simple Step-By-Step Guide To Generating Your Best-Selling eBook” here so you can all use it. You can also download the eBook in PDF format here.

Step 1. Download And Install OpenOffice.Org

OpenOffice.org is available for download at, not surprisingly,

http://www.openoffice.org

It is a full suite of office productivity software like Microsoft Office. The difference is that OpenOffice.org is open source and entirely FREE! What makes it even sweeter is that it’s a pretty darn competent alternative to most paid office suites out there.

And most importantly, it allows you to open a whole variety of file formats (Word, Word Perfect, etc.) and convert the files into PDF format with proper security settings and preserves hyperlinks that are explicitly typed out (http://www.knowledgeip.com) and embedded as anchored text (like this). There are several tools out there that lack the embedding link feature.

Here’s a screen capture of OpenOffice.org’s home page -

- Click on “I want to download OpeOffice.org.”

- You will be prompted to save the file at a desired location. The file is 124MB so if you have broadband connection and use some type of download accelerator, it’ll only take a few minutes. If you have dial-up, order the CD.

(A word on downloading… MAKE SURE you remember where you save the file.)

- Once downloading is complete, locate the file and double-click on the installation file.

- Click on “Next>”

- Fill in the fields & click on “Next>”

- I recommend you select “Complete” to get all features and templates

- Click on “Next>”

- Make sure “Create a start link on desktop” is checked.

- Click on “Install”

- Once the installation is complete, go to the program icon on your desktop.

Double click the program icon to launch the software and select “Text Documents” as the file type to create.

Now you’re ready for step 2. If you use a software other than OpenOffice.org to create your document, make sure it’s compatible.

Step 2: Creating Content

Here’s the part where you use your creativity and writing skills. Remember to apply some copywriting to your content, but don’t overdo it. Hype and over-exaggeration will not give you long term results, and your readers will be annoyed fast.

And of course there are other excellent copywriters out there like John Carlton (he’s considered the BEST copywriter by many top marketers), Eben Pagan, Frank Kern, Mike Dillard and so on.

Since this is not a course on creating content, I’ll leave it up to you to explore the possibilities. However, I’m going to address a few things you might encounter in creating your eBook, specifically -

Formatting & How to use word processing software: I assume you’re a decent typist and know basic formatting like Bold, Italic, Underline and bullets. Do a search on Google for “free microsoft word tutorial” and you’ll find lots of good help.

Creating graphics/images: Again, do a search on Google for free images. Screen captures can easily be done by using the “Print Screen” key on your keyboard and paste it into Microsoft Paint if you are using Windows. If you use Mac you’re smarter and cooler than me (darn…).

Disclaimers and legal notices: I’m not an attorney so I can’t give you the proper legal advice. I personally refer to disclaimers in other author’s eBooks that have proven to be top sellers and edit the language to fit my needs.

Step 3. Converting Your Document Into PDF

Once you finish writing, check the margins, spelling and other formatting properties.

Save the file and go over the OpenOffice.org.

I wrote this guide in Microsoft Word XP and saved it as a .doc file so I’ll just use it as an example.

Go to “File” > “Open” at the top left corner in OpenOffice Writer and navigate to the document you just saved.

Select the file and click on “Open” at the bottom right hand side.

Once the file is open, make sure the formatting is still intact if you did not create the source file in OpenOffice. I had to make some small adjustments but nothing really major.

I recommend that once you finish formatting, save the file again but this time as “.odt” file to preserve the formatting in OpenOffice. NOW, we’re ready to compile the eBook…

Go to “Export As PDF”

At this point, you can actually just click on “Export” to create your eBook, but I recommend that you make some changes to the “Security” settings.

Check the “Restrict permissions” box

> Click on “Set permission password”

> Set and confirm the password

> Select “High resolution” under “Printing”

> Select “Not permitted” under “Changes”

> Uncheck both “Enable copying of content” and “Enable text access for accessibility tools”

These security settings allow you the maximum protection without locking up the whole document with a password.

You can play around with the other settings as you like, but be sure to have your Security settings correctly to protect your investment.

There are also places on the net that allows you to convert PDF in real-time without downloading any software. If you’re in a hurry you can consider those options. However, you have much less flexibility and options in the settings.

Three CIA spies hit me right between the eyes and taught me an important lesson that every magnetic leader MUST know…

About two years ago I decided I was going to become a CIA spy, not knowing fully what I was getting myself into. All I really knew about being a spy was Sidney Bristow, Jack Bauer, and of course the spy that never dies (or ages), James Bond, or better known as 007.

I could only imagine in my head that I’d have lots and lots of cash in all currencies, the ability to speak just about any foreign language, beautiful women all over me asking for my number, the Austin Martin, and crazy martial art moves to come out of every fight… winning!

Excited about the prospect of an illustrious career in the intelligence industry I attended by invitation a CIA recruiting event somewhere in the west coast. As I approached the recruiting table I was greeted by two gentlemen, one a retired clandestine services field officer (i.e. it’s the politically correct term for a spy) the other active.

I whipped out my resume imemdiately, eager to display my qualifications for the job. As I excitedly conversing with the older gentleman, I noticed that his name tag read “Joseph S.” while the other agent’s read “Joe D.” I thought to myself, Joseph & Joe, what are the chances…

What happened next though, started to creep me out a bit…

“It was good talking to you Jerry. Here’s the card of your interviewer. He’ll contact you within the next 72w hours” said Josephn S. as he handed me the card.

I thanked him and read the name on the card… and my interviewer’s name was… Joseph K. Immediately I questioned Joe S.

“Is Joseph your real name?”

He looked at me and gave me sort of a George Bush smirk, wished me good luck with my interview and sent me on my way. As I walked out the door I started feeling uneasy about this whole thing… I mean, why the heck do they all have the same name?

A few days later, I received an e-mail about my interview, signed by Joseph K.,the interviewer assigned to me. It was followed by a personal phone call. He quickly introduced himself (I could swear that voice belonged to Joe. S the recruiter at the event) and asked if I’d be available the following Tuesday at 1:30PM to which I replied positively. After we confirmed the date and time, he didn’t give me the location where we’d be meeting. All he said was he’d call me the morning of our interview to provide instructions in terms of our meeting location…

Totally CIA style.

Now the problem is, I was thoroughly CREEPED OUT! What the heck, 3 people and all their names were Joe. And now this. I was honestly SCARED about getting kidnapped or shot through my own window. Let’s examine the facts:

1) I knew NOTHING about the real identifies of these individuals, and

2) I did’t know where my meeting was going to be. And truthfully,

3) I wasn’t even sure if the guy on the phone was from the CIA. He could be anybody, really.

He could be a rogue agent, or a terrorist, or some spy from another coutry for all I know (well, I really didn’t). He could be watching me as we were talking on the phone!

So there I was, sitting in my room, SHAKING and trying to make sense of these perplexing incidents. And then the question popped in my head…

“Do I really want to work for the CIA?”

The answer was clear. I called Joe K. (whoever he is) back about 30 minutes later and told him that I wasn’t ready. You know what his reply was? He said:

“I thought so.”

Some of you probably got the correlation I’m drawing here with the story, and some of you are thinking “what does this have anything to do with MLM?“ Well, it’s something called

POSTURE.

Mike Dillard talked about this in Magnetic Sponsoring and re-emphasized this point as I attended his MLM Traffic Formula 101 course. When I was creating my e-mail series at the seminar I was asked to create the avatar of my ideal prospect. I had to lay out all the qualities of the ideal person I’d like to have in my business to create the avatar, and then take the features of my business and turn them into benefits that’ll be attractive to my ideal prospects. These benefits might not attract people that do not fit the avatar of my ideal prospect, but it doesn’t matter because the whole point is to attract only the kind of person I want in my business.

The Joe’s definitely had posture and knew what they wanted in an ideal candidate. Their system was designed to find the best candidate they could and weed out the pretenders. And you know what, I wasn’t the one!

Now think for a second about how most network marketers talk to their prospects. Do you think that they usually speak with total confidence and belief? That they are the ones holding the cookies? Based on the law of averages (and real-life stats & observations), the answer is NO.

Many network marketers have no idea what they got themselves into and didn’t approach the business as a business, and why do you think that is? Chances are the posture of the SPONSOR was weak, which inherently attracted weak prospects and/or demonstrated poor posturing that was duplicated in a negative fashion.

What I learned early on from the mentors in my primary MLM opportunity that really made a difference was posturing. It took me sometime to understand and master what posturing meant. It didn’t mean bullying people around or anything like that. It was about being steady in my belief that I was offering someone an opportunity that was extremely valuable and life-changing, for the right person. It wasn’t easy but well worth it.

I was thoroughly frustrated with my prospecting activities in the first 11 months of my business, blasting through 63 warm contacts without sponsoring a single person. Yet, I took a deep breath, calm myself down, learned to posture effectively, and with the coaching of my mentors, eventually climbed to the top of the compensation chart in our business in the next 12 months, personally sponosred as many as 13 active distributors in 7 days, with traditional prospecting.

Is your system almost perfect?

We know there are a lot of “systems” out there within all different business opportunities, and most of them are probably promoted by their leaders as “the system” to the road of success. And truth be told, there is no “perfect” system out there.

In this day and age where opportunities abound and an avalanche of information overflows wherever there is Internet access, the world has become an unfamiliar place for many network marketers. People are becoming more skeptical. While it’s true that only leaders make money in this business, and a solid leadership development system is the real key to the long-term success for a network marketer, one of the most important skills that is so vital to this industry yet seldomly taught properly is LIST-BUILDING.

Most systems out there pretty much teach either leadership and motivation (called rah-rah when overdone) or selling/retailing only, but just about none that I’ve come across actually teaches good, solid list-building strategies.

Every system that I have heard or been part of teaches new distributors this mehtod:

1) Take out a pen and a piece of paper
2) Write down the name and phone number of every person that you know
3) Call them

And this is as much list-building as it gets for them. The rest of the strategy involves starting a conversation cold with 1-5 people within 3-feet of you on a daily basis once that list runs dry. These cold contacts are to be pursued within 24-48 hours and the whole follow-up process generally lasts no more than a couple weeks max.

I have personally built to a somewhat successful level with a very reputable network marketing business using this method, yet I was stuck at that level for almost two years before I finally, beyond the shadow of a doubt, realized that this method is not a duplicatable, effective list-building strategy in today’s world. It might have worked in the past, but times have changed.

This age-old strategy could still work for a while, especially when a company is on the upswing of its growth. However, the network marketers who have switched opportunities a few times will tell you that their “lists” are not so fresh any more(they called the same ppl each time they jump to another opportunity), and going from one opportunity to the next can bring down their credibility quickly.

Now why is it so important to add an effective list-building component to a good training system? Well, in my opinion if you are a conscientious network marketer and truly care for the long-term success of the people you introduce to your opportunity, effective list-building strategy will go a long way to helping someone succeed in this industry. Company management teams and business philosophies change, comp plans can be reconfigured, yet at the end of the day we are still in a relationship marketing business… so it is essential that we teach others a strategy to effectively amass a list to build relationship with!!!

Within those two years when I struggled to maintain my level in the comp plan, I invested much time and money ($8000+) in educating myself about effective marketing strategies and list-building methods. This education process included late late late night reading of various manuals, viewing of video tutorials, testimonials, technical instructions, the works.

I came across many different “gurus” that sold their system as the solution to this common challenge of effective list-building. By and large they all teach the very effective yet basic strategy in Internet Marketing called lead generation, which is essentially the de facto list-building strategy of the Internet age.
